Circa 1880 Aesthetic Movement desk, secretary, curio top, unusual solid ash, curly ash paneled drawer front, nicely carved slant lid writing surface, fitted interior, shelves and drawers in curio top with round, cast lion head ring pulls, oval and square beveled mirrors, arched reticulated carved trim and galley crest, open shelves in base. 67 tall, 32 wide, base-16.5 deep, top-10 deep, writing surface-28.5 tall, 17 deep. Condition overall excellent old finish, nominal usage wear/nicks, missing three inch piece on left front of bottom shelf/left side-crack (see photo). 103v - These and similar desks are often referred to as cowgirl desks.
This is most likely produced in ash wood which is very similar and compatible with oak furniture. Ash is rarer and more costly wood. This desk is solid and curly ash panels. Great example of Aesthetic Movement with Oriental design elements and using rarely seen solid Elm with curly Elm trim. Selection of items from local estates.
