20TH CENTURY FEDERAL ANTIQUE STYLE BOSTON MAHOGANY INLAID TAMBOUR LADIES SECRETARY DESK JOHN & THOMAS SEYMOUR REPRODUCTION. Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world.
We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients. Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this stunning 20th century Federal antique style Boston mahogany tambour secretary desk. Period Boston secretary desks are among the most collectible pieces of furniture and weve had the pleasure of placing a few very choice pieces in public & private collections the last couple of years.
Were not sure if this is an exact copy of a desk in a museum or an amalgam of all the most desirable tambour desk features like the inlaid columns & the variegated wood tambours. The desk has inlaid bellflowers along the legs with string inlay and inlaid cuffs around the ankle. The drawers have cock bead molded faces with their original cornucopia brasses, locks, & escutcheons. The interior has 4 letter drawers and another drawer behind the center valence panel. The desk has a rare convex or swell front format & is in fantastic condition with our only note being very minimal surface wear.
Period Boston examples from the Seymour shop seldom come to market and when they do they regularly sell for high 5 / low 6 figures. This is the chance to experience all of that elegance for a fraction of the cost. We couldnt locate a makers mark on this but believe it was made in Boston some time in the 2nd/3rd quarter of the 20th century. The fine furniture trade was still alive in Boston in the early 20th century and custom cabinet makers still worked by hand to standards that could rival Americas golden age of cabinetry. Sadly the trade is slowly dying out and we only know a handful of cabinet makers still in business.
The desk measures 36 wide x 18 deep x 47 1/2 tall. When the writing tab is open the depth goes from 18 to 25 1/2 with a work surface height of 32. We are a wholly owned family business in our third decade of continuous operation. We have a large inventory of fine antiques ranging from Early American, Federal, Chippendale, Empire, Centennial, Victorian, 20th Century custom mahogany, Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern antique furniture along with decorative arts from across the globe. All the items we offer to the general public are high quality estate pieces.
