A fine and desirable example of the empire period in furniture design. This mahogany secretary desk with bookcase represents a return to simple and functional style and taste of Classical Greece and the Roman Empire. The upper case with bookcase has a gently curving crown molding above a pair of doors. Designed for practicality, the size and proportions are not overbearing. The lower case with a folding writing surface above three drawers is both space saving and beautiful with flame mahogany veneers.

The base is further softened by the use of an upper drawer with curved face, curved pilasters and feet. The Empire style originated in Europe early in the 19th century led by French Design during the Napoleonic era, and was adopted in the second quarter of the century.
