We are happy to offer this beautiful 2 piece Federal mid 1800's mahogany veneer secretary desk and bookcase. The bottom section has 3 locking drawers, the top one with a rounded front. Hand cut dovetails connect the drawer fronts to the sides. Book matched mahogany flame veneer cover the drawer fronts.
A small bead detail runs around the perimeter of the 2 lower drawer fronts. The stretchers around the drawers also have mahogany veneer. On either side of the drawers is a turned column with a square top. The column appears to be made from a figured mahogany. The base of the column has turned ball feet. The back feet are also a ball design, although slightly smaller than the front ones. A hinged top folds open for the desk top and is supported by small felt covered pullouts in the column tops.
The surface of the desk area has a purple felt which is most likely not original. A banded veneer goes around the book matched flame mahogany on the top of the desk section. The upper bookcase section of the cabinet has 2 glass doors that are each divided into 6 sections. The doors are flat on top but the glass has a curved top. A small reeded design faces the muntins around the glass.
As can be seen in the photos there are 2 missing sections of glass and one pane has a crack in the corner. All glass that is still intact is old original hand blown glass.
The left door has a top and bottom brass flush bolts on the edge of the door to secure it in place. The right door locks into the fixed left door. The brass strike plate is missing from the left door, but the latch still holds the door in place. Below the glass doors are 3 small locking drawers with beaded edges. The Inside of the bookcase section has a pale red finish with 2 dark wood shelves. A bead molding projects out just above the doors and around the sides. Two pieces are used to make up the striking crown molding at the top of the bookcase. Again, beautiful figured mahogany veneer covers these surfaces. When looking closely at the photos you can see that the drawer pulls have been replaced with single knobs. The original pulls would have been wider with 2 holes each, and the second hole has been filled. There are some small missing sections of veneer, and a a shrinkage crack on the lower case on the left side.
